Gaithersburg Subscription Holder Claims $500,000 Multi-Match Jackpot

Gaithersburg resident “Cha Cha,” a nickname only the winner’s wife will recognize, celebrates his $500,000 Multi-Match subscription win!

Sixth winner to claim jackpot in 2017

A Montgomery County man had a lot to celebrate last week in addition to Independence Day. The night before the holiday, on July 3, the Multi-Match game subscription holder unknowingly matched all six Multi-Match numbers, taking home the game’s $500,000 jackpot.

The 67-year-old learned of his win the following Wednesday morning when Lottery Communications Director Carole Gentry called him to share the news.

“The reason I like the subscription is because I don’t have to stay on top of checking the numbers,” the project manager told Lottery officials. “I get a check in the mail every so often for small amounts, but I never get a phone call. I thought something was wrong when Carole called me last week.”

The excited, yet shocked winner kept the news to himself until later that evening when his wife came home from work.

“I told her I heard there was a subscription winner in Gaithersburg and handed her my subscription card,” he said. “I then read off the winning numbers and asked her if any matched. She didn’t believe me when I told her we won.”

The winner chose the $250,000 cash option. Although he is unsure as to what he’ll do with his newfound windfall, he mentioned a few ideas from donations to vacations to his grandchild’s education.

This win followed jackpot hits from the June 26 and June 29 drawings. The Lottery is still waiting for those two winners to come forward and claim their prizes. The winning ticket in the June 29 drawing, also for a $500,000 jackpot, was sold by Broadway Pizza in Rockville. The June 26 winning ticket, which is worth $1 million, was sold by Cross Keys Exxon in Baltimore.

With these three hits, Multi-Match has now produced six jackpot winners during 2017. The other three were a Glen Burnie man who claimed a $1.35 million prize in the Jan. 16 drawing; a Berlin man who claimed a $1 million jackpot in the March 23 drawing; and an Ellicott City man who claimed a $725,000 prize in the April 27 drawing.

The top three jackpot wins in the game’s history were $4.8 million on Sept. 19, 2009; $4.45 million on March 18, 2010 and $3.8 million on Dec. 16, 2010.

Multi-Match, which launched in 2006, is a $2 draw game played in Maryland. The jackpot starts at $500,000 and increases after each drawing that does not produce a jackpot winner. Multi-Match Drawing Gives Player a Million Reasons to Pause

Claims first of state’s three jackpot wins that occurred over two-week period

Watching the June 26 Multi-Match drawing became so exciting a Baltimore man had to hit pause on the broadcast so he could better check his quick-pick ticket.

The transportation worker just claimed the first of three Multi-Match jackpot wins that occurred during a recent two-week period. He won $1 million while the two other jackpot prizes were $500,000.

The 47-year-old says the win was a welcome discovery. The loyal player watched as the numbers on his winning ticket appeared, one by one, when he tuned into the evening drawing. Time stood still, literally, as the winner paused the broadcast and reviewed the numbers on his ticket until he spotted his good fortune.

The excitement of the win was contagious! Even though the hour was late, he just had to share the good news with his wife. “I had to wake her up,” said the winner.

After he double- and triple-checked the ticket, the lucky winner relocated it from the location he usually reserves for winning tickets. “This ticket is worth more than my house, so I had to make sure it was safe,” he explained.

The happy husband opted to receive the $600,000 cash option of the $1 million prize. He plans to use a portion of the winnings to pay bills and will save the remainder for his upcoming retirement.

His winning ticket came from Cross Keys Exxon located at 4434 Falls Road in Baltimore. In addition to bragging rights, the service station will receive a bonus of $1,000 for selling a winning Multi-Match ticket of $1 million.

In addition to being part of the recent streak of winners, the lucky player is one of six to claim a Multi-Match jackpot in 2017. Lottery officials are still looking for the owner of a winning ticket sold at Broadway Pizza in Rockville for the June 29 drawing. That ticket, worth $500,000, is the only unclaimed Multi-Match winning ticket. No one hit the jackpot last week, so it rolled to $575,000 for tonight’s July 17 drawing. The cash option is $287,500.

Claims $500,000 prize from June 29 drawing

A lifelong Montgomery County Multi-Match player who never lost faith in her lucky numbers came home from an out-of-state trip to a welcome surprise.

Someone had hit the game’s $500,000 jackpot on June 29 and, even better, the winning ticket hailed from Broadway Pizza in Rockville, which is one of her favorite Maryland Lottery retailers. Could she be the winner? The answer: yes!

“It was a great way to end her vacation,” said the lucky player’s friend as they relaxed in the Winner’s Circle at Lottery headquarters after claiming the jackpot prize.

The entrepreneur has played Lottery games for decades since moving to Maryland. Although small wins came her way, the jackpot remained elusive until now. Her Lottery luck took a winning turn on the day she cashed in a winning Multi-Match ticket at Broadway Pizza. Knowing that she was leaving Maryland for her trip and would miss a few drawings, the grandmother of three reinvested her small prize in another Multi-Match ticket for multiple drawings. She was so busy over the next week or so, the lucky player never checked the winning numbers for any drawings before returning to Maryland.

Only when she arrived at a Lottery retailer and scanned her ticket did the mother of three adult children realize that she was, indeed, the jackpot winner! The happy player shared the great news with her husband and then consulted the Lottery’s Customer Resource Center director, Patricia Wongus-Dorsey, about her options in taking the jackpot as an annuity vs. a cash prize. Ultimately, she chose the cash option.

“Patricia was so lovely on the phone,” she said. “I had so many questions and I called her back several times.”

Our winner was the fifth of six players to hit a Multi-Match jackpot in 2017. She plans to save the prize to enjoy in retirement and share some of the winnings with her children.

Her lucky Lottery retailer, Broadway Pizza, is also celebrating. The Montgomery County business located at 7965 Tuckerman Lane in Rockville earns a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a jackpot-winning ticket.

There’s still time to buy tickets for tonight’s Multi-Match drawing, which has a jackpot of $700,000. The cash option is $350,000 (before taxes).

Reisterstown woman claims $775,000 prize from Aug. 14 drawing

Stopping in at Cherryvale Liquors in Reisterstown to get a few Powerball tickets, a 50-year-old accountant learned that the store had sold a $775,000 jackpot-winning ticket in the Aug. 14 Multi-Match drawing.

The wife and mother flashed back to her last visit to the store. The Baltimore County resident had purchased three tickets for that very game, for that very drawing. A few minutes later, she was crying and laughing at the same time.

“I dug through my purse to find the tickets,” the excited winner told Lottery officials when she claimed her prize. “I was pretty sure they were in there. I was barely breathing when I scanned them and when the message told me to take them to Lottery headquarters, oh my goodness, I couldn’t breathe!”

A regular Lottery customer at Cherryvale Liquors, she’s formed a friendship with the owner. He looked up the winning numbers, compared them to her ticket, turned to her and said, “It’s you!”

“I really could not believe it, I just started crying,” the Reisterstown resident said. The owner called the winner’s husband and told him that he was needed at the store. When the concerned spouse arrived, he learned of his wife’s amazing jackpot win. The couple celebrated first with the store employees, later with co-workers and finally together at home. The winning ticket was part of the fun.

“It was in my purse the whole time,” the winner said. “I wouldn’t put it down. I even slept with it last night.”

When asked about plans for the jackpot win, the happy woman said, “This will help us in so many ways – the mortgage, credit card bills … we can help our kids and maybe even take a vacation.”

Also celebrating the win is her lucky Baltimore County retailer. For selling a jackpot-winning ticket, Cherryvale Liquors located at 11801 Reisterstown Road in Reisterstown earned a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.

Prince George’s County player finds winning ticket in Clinton

Luck is even better the second time around, according to our $2.85 million Multi-Match jackpot winner. Her Jan. 18 win was the second one for the 46-year-old Prince George’s County resident and the 6th highest Multi-Match jackpot in the history of the game.

Things began to get interesting the day after the drawing for the Multi-Match regular. A friend called and asked if she had purchased a ticket the night before. When she learned there was a winning jackpot ticket sold in the area, the loyal player pulled out her ticket and began to check its numbers and wonder about the chances of winning again. Coventry Way Exxon in Clinton had sold the lucky ticket.

“I was so grateful for my earlier win,” she said. “You always think about the chance of winning again, but figure it will never happen.”

Amazingly, when the medical caregiver and her friend scanned the ticket using the Maryland Lottery app, the reality of the win stared them right in the face. The cellphone screen displayed a message of congratulations with the $2,850,000 prize in bold.

The winner thinks she owes her unlikely luck to her giving nature. In her professional and personal life, she is attuned to the needs of others and puts other people first. “I’m a giver. It’s just what I do naturally,” she said.

The happy player put her first Multi-Match prize into savings and doing some good for others. She plans to discuss her new prize with a financial planner, saying the jackpot win will allow her to invest in her future.

Also sharing in the Multi-Match excitement is Coventry Way Exxon located at 6441 Coventry Way in Clinton. The lucky Prince George’s County retailer earns a $2,850 bonus from the Lottery for selling a jackpot-winning Multi-Match ticket. Congrats!

Multi-Match is on another roll, with the jackpot set at $525,000 for the Thursday, Jan. 25 drawing. The cash option is $262,500.

Man with Two Birth Dates Plays Both, Wins $1.9 Million Jackpot

Married couple claim 2nd Multi-Match jackpot of 2018

If a birth date is lucky, then by logic a man with two birth dates must be doubly lucky, right? That appears true for a 79-year-old Gaithersburg man who claimed a $1.9 million jackpot prize from the May 7 Multi-Match drawing.

A paperwork fluke gave the winner two birth dates when he was born in Louisiana in 1939. For most of his life, the Montgomery County resident used the erroneous April 23 date and only recently officially updated his vital records to reflect his actual April 21 birth date. The Maryland Lottery fan considers both dates lucky and plays them on a variety of games, including Multi-Match.

On May 7, his birth dates delivered a belated birthday gift to the ride-share driver! The six numbers in his string of lucky numbers matched the winning numbers, giving him the game’s $1.9 million jackpot and ending the game’s jackpot roll. He became the second Multi-Match jackpot winner of 2018.

The lucky player discovered the astounding result the day after the drawing, when he returned home between work shifts. “I was scanning the newspaper and flipped to the Lottery section first, and when I saw the numbers my eyes just grew bigger and bigger,” he said. The astonished player immediately called his wife to share the sensational news. “When I told her how much we had won, at first she didn’t believe me!”

The winning couple elected to take the prize’s cash option, which totaled $1.45 million before taxes. The happy pair are planning to discuss the windfall with a financial adviser and may use the funds to pay off bills and donate to their church.

Their lucky ticket seller, Brighton Beer & Wine located at 225 Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg, is also a winner. The store earned a $1,900 bonus from the Lottery for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

The first jackpot hit in 2018 on Jan. 18 delivered a $2.85 million prize – the sixth-largest in the game’s history – to an anonymous Prince George’s County woman who bought her ticket at Coventry Way Exxon in Clinton. There’s still time to buy tickets for the May 17 drawing, which carries a $550,000 jackpot. The cash option is $275,000.

Linda Cleveland of Frederick became the third Multi-Match jackpot winner this year!

Claims third jackpot of 2018

The Maryland Lottery’s Multi-Match game is on fire! The in-state game delivered its third jackpot of 2018 to a 58-year-old Frederick woman who buys games every Monday after work for the two drawings each week.

On June 4, Linda Cleveland followed her routine and purchased tickets at Festival Major Liquors for the June 4 and June 7 Multi-Match drawings. She returned home and the week came and went. She rarely watches the drawings, said the loyal player. Instead, she scans her tickets for winners at the store on Mondays and then buys tickets for the upcoming week.

What a wonderful surprise awaited her!

“I scanned the ticket and it said it was a winner, but I thought, ‘This can’t be right,’ ” Linda said, smiling at the memory. “When I went to the cashier, she confirmed it was a $700,000 winning ticket!”

The cancer research biologist is floating on Cloud 9! Linda let the terminal pick two lines of numbers on the ticket and used her “lucky” numbers for a third line. She hit the jackpot on one of the quick-pick lines!

“When I checked the (Lottery) website and read the press release about the winning ticket being sold in Frederick, I just couldn’t believe it was talking about me,” Linda said.

The happy player texted her sister to share news of her Lottery luck. She didn’t tell her other siblings, though, before claiming the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. Linda has big plans for her winnings: updating her kitchen and buying a new car. She chose the cash option for the $700,000 jackpot, which was $334,864 before taxes.

Also a big winner is the lucky Frederick County retailer. Festival Major Liquors located at 446 Prospect Boulevard in Frederick earned a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

Mt. Airy man claims $2.35 million prize

A Carroll County resident who worked on computer equipment that guides U.S. Navy pilots to their targets just scored a perfect hit on the Maryland Lottery Multi-Match jackpot. The targeting expert won $2.35 million in the Oct. 4 drawing and is setting his sights on a new goal — retirement.

The lucky Mt. Airy man bought several Multi-Match tickets on Oct. 3 at Carroll Liquors for the drawing. Thursday night, he was watching TV as the numbers were drawn. The loyal player had numerous tickets to check and was down to his final three when he came across the big winner.

“When I saw the numbers, I called my wife and checked it on the phone,” he said. The Lottery smartphone app confirmed his jackpot win.

“I’ve been shaking ever since,” he told Lottery officials as he and his wife claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The lucky grandfather said he was so excited about his big win he was doing his happy dance and only slept for about two hours.

“I’m hurting today,” he said in a booming voice, followed by a hearty laugh.

The Multi-Match winner has worked all of his life, having started in the restaurant business at age 14. He joined the Navy and worked on a computer system known as the “highway in the sky” that is comparable to modern vehicle GPS systems. Ever since, the veteran has devoted his time to the computer industry. His wife expects to retire right away and our winner plans to follow her lead in a few years after they pay off outstanding bills.

Life as a retired Multi-Match winner will feature family time and beach trips. “We’ll be watching the grandkids,” he said. They’ll also take their truck and trailer – equipped with air conditioning, shower and a microwave oven – to sandy destinations from Ocean City to Myrtle Beach. “We rough it real hard!” he said.

The lucky winner selected the jackpot’s cash option, which results in an estimated payoff of $1.675 million, before taxes.

For selling the ticket with winning numbers of 6, 10, 13, 16, 23 and 25, retailer Carroll Liquors at 6 East Ridgeville Boulevard in Mt. Airy earned a $2,035 bonus from the Lottery.
